OUR COMMUNITY
Our Community
Our approach to community engagement is to build lasting relationships based on trust, transparency, and mutual respect. Our goal is to be as responsive as possible to stakeholder input, ensuring that the surrounding communities benefit from our presence.
We are committed to keeping community members and stakeholders informed and engaged in every step of our process.

Social and Economic Development

Strengthening the economy of the community is important to us. We estimate the cost of building the Mason Project is $2.1 billion. Based on a similar-sized mine, we will need approximately 600 contractors to construct the project and 300 full-time employees for operations. We will create another 2,000 “indirect jobs” in the community. A project of this scale will also generate millions of dollars of tax revenues for state and local governments.
We plan to hire a local firm to perform an economic analysis of the project to provide a more precise estimate of our economic benefits to the local community and the State of Nevada.

Working with Tribes

We recognize the sovereignty of each native tribe near our project and their unique cultures and ways of life. Developing a strong working relationship with Tribal communities is essential to our success. We want to communicate directly with leaders and members to find common ground. Ultimately, we want to avoid or mitigate adverse impacts on cultural practices or areas of significance to tribes.
In 2020, Mason proposed developing a scholarship program for members of the Yerington Paiute Tribe. One student is selected each year to receive the $8,000 scholarship over four years of study. Students can use the scholarship to attend community college, trade school, or a university in Nevada. The scholarship can also be used to pay for expenses or other costs associated with attending school.

Giving Back

We care about our community. Hudbay believes that strong communities, quality education, a healthy environment, and a vibrant local economy are essential to a successful mining operation.
Our Community Contribution program aims to contribute to areas the community has identified as important, where there are pressing community needs, and where we can have a meaningful impact without creating dependency.
